I have discovered the joy of writing poetry by taking workshops with Edwina Trentham (who I call “The Divine Poetess.”) She is an amazing poet and teacher who brings out the best in her students at all her workshops. Because of her support, I have had two of my poems published. One is a found poem I created titled, “Gasconading Bluster” which is found in the anthology titled, “Unlocking the Word: An Anthology of Found Poetry,” by Joel Zdanys, PhD, which is available on Amazon.com.
My poem, Evensong, was published on the Connecticut Poetry Society’s website in August 2017. Here it is:
Evensong
Sing unto the Earth a new song
for She has done marvelous things
Glory be to sparrow for her hymn
of laudation to the eventide
Glory be to surging and surrendering
like the ruffling and swirling and furling waves
Glory be to gossamer clouds, buoyantly scudding
above our strife and struggle
Glory be to the sanctifying wind, chanting
a psalm of mystery
Glory be to a sunset exuberant, slowly cloaking
itself in sacred twilight
Sing praises to Wisdom
Sing praises to Beauty
Sing praises to Creation
Glory be
I wrote the following poem in reaction to the devastating news that Trump won the presidency. As I watched all the pink-capped women marching on the day of his inauguration, I couldn’t help but seeing a murmuration of like-minded people uniting to make a statement for change.
the murmuration
January 21, 2017
a swirling, flowing collective
shape-shifting into an assembly united in flight,
designed to establish distance from
the predator
lurking at the edge of the formation
the flock responds as one,
it will not be divided,
at the cusp of the shift
at the critical transition,
each member coordinates her movement with
her seven nearest neighbors
creating a ballet encompassing
millions of pink-capped sisters
twirling and spiraling and surging
in synchronicity
across the sky
